Polycarbonate is a clear, transparent plastic sheet with very high impact resistance. Transparent polycarbonate is 250x stronger than glass in the same thickness. Because of this characteristic, it is excellent to be used as security glazing or protection that must be vandal-proof, burglary-proof and with high impact resistance. Furthermore, polycarbonate has a fire classification which makes the material to be allowed by the fire department to be used in public spaces (with the exception of airports, there you can only use PETG). Polycarbonate is having the fire certification Bs1D0 according to EN 13501-1 and is allowed to be used in public spaces, because of the high-temperature resistance. Lexan sheets are self-extinguishing and fire retardant. Another characteristic of this material is that it is easy to cold bend it without cracking. Polycarbonate is unbreakable! Furthermore, the sheets are 50% lighter than glass and are UV-resistant.

    Stock clear polycarbonate

PyraSied has transparent polycarbonate sheets on stock in 0,75 – 15 mm thickness. Sheets up to 1,5mm thick have the maximum sheet size of 2050x1250mm. Other thicknesses have a sheet size of 30502050mm.  Are you looking for thicker material? Then it can be supplied from factory stock. Please contact our sales & support department for more information. If you want to have more choice in colours and thicknesses, then we advise using acrylic. Acrylic is optically purer than polycarbonate and scratches less easily.

This material is also available in colours. You can choose from smoke brown and anthracite. Besides colours, we also have an impact-resistant mirror in silver available.

    Surface characteristics

PyraSied has impact-resistant polycarbonate available with a glossy surface with and without a UV-protective surface. For extra high breaking strength, we can produce custom-made Makrolon® Titan sheets in 18 and 20mm thick.

    Tubes and round rods

PyraSied also has transparent impact-resistant tubes and round rods on stock in various wall thicknesses and diameters.

    Application possibilities

Burglary glazing, shed glazing, bicycle sheds, lighting, ceiling sheets, machine parts, protective covers, bulkheads, technical products/services, boat windows, illuminated signs and it is also often used in the food industry. Check out our inspiration platform for application examples.

    Fabrication possibilities

This material is suitable for cutting, milling, hot and cold bending, bonding, drilling, faceting, polishing, matting and printing. For more information about our fabrication services, please go visit our fabrication page.

    Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between acrylic, polycarbonate and PETG?

Acrylic is crystal clear, 25 times stronger than glass and available in many colours, thicknesses and surface structures. Acrylic has the fire classification EN13501. Acrylic is very easy to fabricate: sawing/cutting, milling, laser-cutting, hot and cold bending, glueing/bonding, drilling, polishing and sanding and printing.

    Brand names: PLEXIGLAS®, Versato®, Primo®, Perspex®, Nudec® PMMA, Altuglas® and Astariglas®.

Polycarbonate is very impact resistant and 250 times stronger than glass. This material is less clear in comparison to acrylic. Polycarbonate is available in clear and in some colours. This material has a better fire classification than acrylic: Bs1d0. Polycarbonate cannot always be laser-cut.

    Brand names: Makrolon® and Lexan®

PETG is food-grade certified, chemical resistant and is the only plastic that is allowed in public spaces such as airports. Furthermore, PETG is impact resistant and has the same fire certification as polycarbonate. PETG is not UV-resistant. PETG does not have any thickness tolerance and is available in clear and in some colour variations. PETG can also be vacuum formed. This material cannot always be laser-cut.

    Brand names: Vivak®

What is the difference between polycarbonate and glass?

Polycarbonate is 250 times stronger than glass, it is extremely impact-resistant. In addition, polycarbonate has a good fire classification (B1). Glass is clearer than polycarbonate.

Can I use polycarbonate for outdoor applications?

Yes, however, only the UV-proof types are suitable for outdoor use.
