Mirrors are sheets with a mirror surface on one side. These sheets are made by evaporating a metallic layer on one side of a transparent or coloured sheet. This layer is protected with a PU-coating. PyraSied has the mirrors in stock in various colours in acrylic and in silver in polycarbonate. Polycarbonate mirror is way more impact resistant than an acrylic mirror. However, polycarbonate is more scratch-sensitive than acrylic. Acrylic can be set in a radius of 300x the material thickness without any rupture, if neatly cut. With polycarbonate that is 100x the material thickness.
An advantage of mirror acrylic is that it does not break as quickly as normal mirrors. In fact, it is technically unbreakable. Another advantage over normal mirrors is that it is a lot lighter in weight and easy to fabricate. Mirrored plexiglass has hardly any thickness tolerance. The Primo XT mirror acrylic (PLEXIGLAS®/pmma) is 25 times stronger than glass and is in stock in 11 different colours in a thickness of 3mm. Mirror acrylic is lightweight, rigid, practically unbreakable and barely knows any thickness tolerance. The mirror coating is very vulnerable. As such, one should not apply any kind of tape to the mirror’s surface, even if it’s temporary. Removing the tape will damage the coating. You should also avoid the use of any acid materials. PyraSied is having 11 different mirror colours of XT acrylic sheets on stock in 3mm with a gloss/mirror surface. You can order this material cut to size, per full sheet or you can compose your own mix-pallet with various colours.
The mirror can be used for many different applications. When the weight of the material is important, then plastic has a major advantage. Glass mirrors are for example dangerous for ceilings, therefore plastic mirrors offer a safer solution. The standard acrylic mirrors cannot be used for outdoor applications and in wet conditions, otherwise the metal-coating will oxidise. Polycarbonate mirror is recommended when the mirror must be vandal-proof.
Mirrored acrylic is less stiff in comparison to glass mirrors. Acrylic sheets in this thickness are slightly flexible and must be attached to a flat surface for a good result. If this is not done properly, you will get a distorting mirror. The distortion effect increases when you are using larger surfaces of this material. We recommend using 5mm thick mirrored sheets if you would like to use large sheets of this material.

Yes, mirror acrylic can be laser-cut, but you must use the correct settings for the laser machine. The settings change per laser machine, which is why we recommend testing on a small piece of acrylic first. If the settings are not set correctly, the edges may become ugly or the foil may come off, for example.
Polycarbonate is more impact resistant than acrylic and has a better fire rating than acrylic. Extruded acrylic has the fire classification E according to the applicable norm EN 13501-1. Acrylic burns completely without smoke or emissions of other hazardous products. Deformation will take place depending on how the material is used. We do not recommend to use this material as ceilings in escape routes because of the possible deformation. Polycarbonate has the fire classification Bs1d0 according to EN 13501-1 for the thicknesses of 1 to 6 mm.
No, mirror acrylic is slightly flexible and must be attached to a flat surface for a good result. This is due to the reflection. If this is not done properly, you will get a distorting mirror (funhouse mirror).
In addition, the larger the surface of the mirror sheet, the greater the distortion effect. Keep this in mind.
Mirrors can also not be warm bended, the mirror layer becomes matte or worse.
It is possible to attach the mirror with mirror holders, spacers or with sealant on a wall. (you can only do this once! When removing the mirror, the mirror film will be damaged). You should use an acid-free silicone sealant when attaching the mirror sheets to walls or other substrates. As the mirror sheets do expand and contract with temperature, the minimum thickness of the sealant layer is 2 mm behind the sheets. You can also use natural foam tape with a minimum thickness of 2mm.
You can not use regular tape or anything acidic, even temporary.
The mirrors can be cleaned with a soft non-woven cloth. You can use water with some detergent, household vinegar or cleaning-alcohol. PyraSied recommends to use Burnus antistatic cleaner or VuPlex. VuPlex gives a protective layer and removes visually small scratches. PyraSied can supply these multifunctional cleaners. You should never use Glassex, strong solvents, schotch-brite and other abrasive products. When the material has scratches, you can remove those by sanding the front side of the material with a grain 1200 (depending on the deepness of the scratch) followed by polishing the material with a soft cotton and a polishing agent.
